Taimanov’s Surface Evolution and Bäcklund Transformations for Curves

Taimanov’s evolution of conformally parametrized surfaces in Euclidean space by the modified Novikov-Veselov equation is interpreted here (in the revolution case) using hyperbolic geometry and Bäcklund transformations for curves.

Gauge Transformations and Reciprocal Links in 2 + 1

Generalized Lax equations are considered in the spirit of Sato theory. Three decompositions of an underlying algebra of pseudo-diierential operators lead, in turn, to three diierent classes of integrable nonlinear hierarchies. These are associated with Kadomtsev-Petviashvili, modiied Kadomtsev-Petviashvili and Dym hierarchies in 2+1 dimensions. Miura-and auto-BB acklund transformations are show...

On Schur Flows

For the nite Schur (dmKdV) ows, a nonlocal Poisson structure is introduced and shown to be linked via BB acklund-Darboux transformations to linear and quadratic Poisson structures for the Toda lattice. Two diierent Lax representation for the Schur ows are used, one to construct BB acklund-Darboux transformations, the other to solve the Cauchy problem via the trigonometric moment problem.

Backlund transformations and knots of constant torsion

The BB acklund transformation for pseudospherical surfaces, which is equivalent to that of the sine-Gordon equation, can be restricted to give a transformation on space curves that preserves constant torsion. We study its eeects on closed curves (in particular, elastic rods) that generate multiphase solutions for the vortex lament ow (also known as the Localized Induction Equation). In doing so...

Schwarz Reflection Geometry I: Continuous Iteration of Reflection

Differential equations are derived for a continous limit of iterated Schwarzian reflection of analytic curves, and solutions are interpreted as geodesics in an infinite-dimensional symmetric space geometry.
